My Life as A River

Every Creature

God carved alabaster art out of dark space
a magnificent—reflective moon
to shine a standard of beauty and peace
to transport our nightly howls—
soaked in scorching sheets of anxiety
into the infinities of a merciful cosmos
for as her luster happily reflects the sun’s light
she effortlessly absorbs its burning consumption

if we could also reflect each other’s light
sculpted with our reflecting gifts of art and love
while ignoring popular scorns of fiery words
all our calmer coronas will quickly extinguish
the heat waves of dark and empty indifference
as we smother anger in lights of kindness

this is why every creature reveres the moon
as she paints their serene whispers of night
into a bright and dependable friend
for even in the stark nakedness of a new moon
the hope of her returning light is never lost
and we could all learn from Earth’s creatures
to become gentler stars embracing God’s light
