One Gift

Christmas is the season to give
but we must also never forget
how to better receive one gift—
one far beyond our own standing
above our individual circumstances
beyond each one of our ordeals
and exceeding all comprehension
a gift offered by the one who does
understand us and all these things
and taught us how to give thanks
for His one selfless and perfect gift

we joyously spend billions
to understand the most distant
lights and properties of
the stars
surrounding our universe

so—what do we spend
to understand the closest
lights and challenges of
the neighbors
surrounding us
