This month, I was privileged to attend a training seminar sponsored by letstalk-parkcity.com on the subject of talking. An art that I fear is being lost in much of our daily dialog, mainly when politics becomes the subject! This class covered valuable topics such as Self-awareness—or recognizing how feelings impact your ability to listen. Active Listening—or listening to deeper priorities and messages behind stories. Finding Common Ground—learning to find common issues, even where disagreements exist. Communicating to Connect—learning how storytelling and speaking from personal experiences can connect people. Building Trust to build connections, and lastly, Connecting, Not Convincing. It is easy to respond to people by saying, “I hear you, but…” Instead, we could learn to reply with, “I hear you, and…” This simple reply leads to a much better conversation that can even build friendships. And one of the best ways to build connections and friendships is by telling your own story! In a way, these small collections of poems have become the foundation of my story.
