I am so lucky to live in Kamas Valley, UT. Diane and I moved here nearly 44 years ago, and we watched our little family and the community grow over those years. Our kids and we made so many friends, and many are still here. Back then, Oakley had a population of about 250. Today it is approaching ten times that. So I treasure every moment when “old-timers” still call us “new-move-ins.” I pray that I will always be new. But in reality—I’m also becoming an old-timer. The beauty of this smallish recluse of a mountain valley always takes my breath away—every day. I frequently ask Diane, “How are we fortunate enough to live here?” (In my mind, I think like a famous old movie quote: “Is this heaven?”) Heaven is also found in what we give or how we use our gifts. And our friends and family are a precious gift, even more so than this verdant vale. Last month, I wrote about the ancient geologic history of this valley and its mountains; but now I tend to reflect more upon our short personal history here. What we have to give, and how we use every short year we are blessed. Even here—we, like many of you, have our challenges. We have had two children deal with severe cancer, and the other two deal with other serious health issues. I have fought lung problems for many years because my body doesn’t always seem to like me, yet I still love it. And just a few months ago, Diane was diagnosed with lung cancer. She is dealing with it well, and her outlook is nothing short of a miracle! Then a couple of weeks ago, I was informed that I likely have cancer. What are the odds? So—I have to join with the hopes and dreams of this little valley. Always beautiful, peaceful, and kind. Oh, and one minor thing about me: I am a very poor loser and do not give up easily. My faith is like my friends; it is buried so deep in my chest and bones that it can never be pried out or forgotten. Ever! May God bless you all in another month of this epic magnificence, Doug
