This month, we lost a dear furry friend to old age. Luigi was like a child to our dear daughter and brought us and our extended family much happiness! Knowing that we will all be together beyond time is comforting. Diane and I have also spent considerable time rewilding much of our yard, not only to conserve water, but also to create an inviting habitat for wildlife. And that is where some challenges begin. While beautiful, we have become unwitting hosts to approximately eight deer, numerous elk, foxes, sandhill cranes, rabbits, cats, and countless other birds. Now that the wildlife understand it is a safe place, they fearlessly hang out around us as we labor in the yard, and they eat some things that were not planted for them. We created more work, but have also found joy. As I wrote the poem below, a clamorous young magpie decided she would sit in as my editor. Maggie was kind, yet loud and extremely opinionated! And yes—she perched on top of my head and left me some love. She has become an oft-visited friend, and we have enjoyed chatting in our blessed sanctuary of peace.
