During the pandemic, I had the privilege of taking some online writing seminars taught by the world-renowned poet Rupi Kaur. It was such a privilege for many of us to read some of our works to her and receive her critiques and compliments. Somewhat later, I read another of her posts that reminded me of her counsel, which, as usual, I had forgotten because of my stubbornness until recently. She taught a principle that eventually took root in my puny mind. One I needed recently, as I have dealt with some minor health issues. Using my own words, it goes something like this: Each of us is blessed with an inspiring moment each day, usually in the early morning, but sometimes late evening. During these stirring calls of our whispering spirits, we are presented with a choice. Act, or be acted upon. We can reach for the yearnings of that small, expensive, glowing device—alerting you again to its persistent ultimatum. And if you give in, as I often do, social media, doomscrolling, and news media will easily consume any hallowed connections afforded by those brief gifts of enlightenment. Instead, try to use those moments to do some good for yourself or others, in whatever way is unique to you. Your joy may be found in reading, studying, exercise, meditation, or mindful actions. It may be found in arts, such as drawing, painting, music, or writing. Leap out into nature and absorb divinity by hiking, biking, or just sitting. Serving others is also easier if you avoid those menacing temptations. Whatever your unique gift is, use it before it is obliterated by that unrelenting glow of waste. Let’s all look up—not down!
