Election season is hard for many of us. So much of our world seems to thrive on contention and division. Words are becoming more reckless and damaging. And the fear that ensues from such discord refuels the appetites of those who seek power. And I can understand this model of authority. It is built on a very long legacy. But what troubles me now is how Christianity is being used to justify such prideful means. That is not its real purpose. At its core, Christianity, in fact, all religious teachings, are meant to heal, using faith in God and hope for a future that surpasses any political understanding. When I get confused and depressed, I fall back to the basic teachings of Jesus, which I learned as a young boy. I also test the angry noises with His famous Sermon on the Mount, particularly its profound introduction—The Beatitudes. On that note, I wrote a 9 part poetry piece titled “A Friend on the Mountain,” inspired by those simple, kind, humble, and loveable teachings. Yes—we can differ in many things and ideas—but we do not need to ignite our dialogs with anger or call our neighbors evil. I sincerely hope you find some peace herein.
