With the advent of spring and impending summer, I have finally been able to open the door and touch the miracle of green. And never has it meant more. With all of the challenges we face in this world, let us not forget the world itself and how this blessed home of God’s creation can offer solace and a touch of divinity when it is needed most. I, like many of you, have been troubled by the recent announcement of another massive AI data center in northern Utah. A project that can consume twice the amount of energy that the entire state uses at present. I am also disturbed by the possible future uses of AI and how it may be integrated in ways we can’t even begin to comprehend. What freedoms are we willing to risk to become another digital entry in an ever-expanding database of billions? In machines that are learning and deriving their future purposes and creativity from us, good and bad. This is why touching nature and finding your secret space in the personal care of our Creator’s work is so important. Let’s all give the digital oracles in our pockets a routine rest. Lock them up for a moment and spend that time outside. Get your hands dirty. Smell the clean air. Dip your toes in the flowing waters that bring us all life. Get on a bike. Go for a long walk or a hike. Let’s make it a habit. It’s much easier than looking for answers in a device that relishes telling us each day what we should be upset about.
