I am often troubled by reports that institutions of science and learning are becoming an enemy of our country’s political greatness. And I frequently read about a precarious divide separating science and religion, suggesting that you can only follow one path if you want to be true to yourself. But somewhere in my long life, I have become an unconformist and have failed to tread such a precipice. As one of God’s meager creatures who finds peace and solace, not only in His divine creation of our natural world, I also find inspiration and hope in exploring our planet’s vast oceans of science. And to me, they are the same, for I sense God‘s presence in both, and I rejoice in the benefits both provide. Science and technology enlighten my mind, and religion enlightens my heart. I reason with both, and they become beacons of faith and direction in this treacherous world we find ourselves in. I better understand that our creation was not magical, but a miracle of science and true universal principles, and that billions of years is merely a patient process of heavenly love. If we can coalesce the two — heart and mind, spirit and body, faith and intellect — we will discover a freedom and enlightenment that fills us with light and compassion. We will think more critically, follow fewer conspiracies, and find joy by following the paths of some of our most profound questions. This desire can draw us into a divine unity and foster a willingness to use that wisdom to help our neighbors and our planet. Everyone can benefit.
