As we sense the air of September’s clutch, it becomes noticeably cooler, heavier, and carries its earthen aroma of early morning dew and an impending change. As I become part of this ephemeral mystery, I am reminded of how precious water truly is, especially after experiencing a dreadful summer drought. Water is life, both physically and spiritually, and I pray for its protection in all our stewardship efforts. Creation care of God’s home for us has become a priority in my life, as I witness the consequences of our prideful contributions to climate change on so many fronts, particularly the poorer communities of this planet. To care for our neighbors, we must also care for our shared home on earth. Carbon-based energy has enabled our vital industrial growth, but now we are more innovative and more efficient. We understand how to harness and utilize renewable energy in our modern technological age. We need just the courage to make the most of this blessing. It was just over two years ago that our small town nearly ran out of water due to rapid growth and an increasingly scarce resource. This past month, we were finally able to complete the well project—after two long years of construction, thereby providing a new source of cold, clear water to our municipality. This priceless water nourishes our bodies as much as seeking spiritual waters can nourish our spirits. Please join me in recognizing this often forgotten godsend.
