My wife and I built our home. And not just metaphorically. Nearly forty years ago, we started constructing our dream. We designed it and started by forming our basement, pouring and finishing all the concrete ourselves. Those forms became our upper floor. I remember every nail, every crushed finger, every wire, every pipe, shingle, door, window, and timber. We were the contractors, and we both built it on a contract of love—carefully fastening it upon the hopes of a blessed future. We worked diligently for many years, and even now—some things are not quite completed. And we continue to face typical challenges. But here is the thing I learned. As hard as we toiled, she made our strong house a soft, warm home. No matter how hard I worked, I could not cross the threshold of its spiritual connection to us, nature, and God as she could. She gave it a warm spirit and personality. It reflects her beauty, and it lives. Our creation is graciously made from God’s creation. And that is part of the story and legacy of our life together.
