A Higher Enlightenment
I am troubled by stories that institutions of science and learning are becoming an enemy of our country’s political greatness. And I repeatedly hear about a precarious divide—separating science and religion, suggesting that you can only follow one path if you want to be true to knowledge or yourself. But somewhere in my protracted life, my stone has developed an unconformity, and I avoid the edges of any steep abyss. As one of God’s meager creatures who discovers peace and solace, not only in a divine creation of our natural world, but I also uncover inspiration and hope in exploring our planet’s vast oceans of science. To me, they are the same, for I sense God’s presence in both, and I rejoice in the benefits and truths both provide. Science and technology enlighten my mind, and faith enlightens my heart. I reason with both, and they become beacons of hope and direction in this treacherous world I find myself in. I better comprehend that our creation was not magical, but a miracle of science and true universal principles, and that billions of years is merely a patient process upon the spreading vines of heavenly love. If we can coalesce the two—heart and mind, spirit and body, faith and intellect—we will unearth a freedom and enlightenment that fills us with courage and compassion. We will think more critically, follow fewer conspiracies, and find joy by following the paths of some of our most profound questions. Pathways charted by reverends of faith and revered scientists. This longing can draw us into a divine unity and foster a willingness to avoid conflict and use dependable wisdom to help our neighbors and our planet. Everyone would benefit. I hope you will join me as I try to amass such courage. To stand up for truth and honor while humbling myself in a far kinder and selfless form of service.
