Signs

We recently embarked on a journey to explore the historical sites of our families and churches—nestled in the stunning mid-west quilts of Missouri and Illinois, US. As we stood on the edge of a pronounced grassy emerald hill, the scent of wildflowers and the melodic birdsong filled the moist—heavy air, creating a serene atmosphere. Our gaze was drawn to a verdant agrarian valley cradled by the ribbon of a great meandering river. It was here that a notable sign stood, its warning prominent, “Snakes in the area, please stay on the path.” This marker—an unsettling portent reliably served its purpose and kept every visitor treading precisely upon its designated and manicured pathway. I pondered this odd dichotomy of peace and fear, and I realized how such an appropriate caution not only serves this meadow—but applies equally well to life.
