The One Big Thing

I walked dark—uncharted paths of confusion
I searched for answers tangled up in anger
I laughed over shameful labels of derision
I unabashedly judged while horribly unworthy
I relished in God’s glorious blushes of life
while ignoring its pleas of dearth and hunger
I asked the heavens for cool—calming rains
but guilt pelted me in hot hailstones of stupor

Beyond all my sins and capacious stupidities
Beyond my bloviating words of worthlessness
Beyond toxins brewed in my beguiling pride
Beyond significant moments I failed to seize
Beyond the fleeting earthen molds of my hands
Beyond taunts of my deeply engraven secrets
I heard a small voice from God’s humblest Child
Reminding me the simplest rule of humanity—

Treat every person you know or don’t know
as you would want each of them—to treat you

This one law ascends beyond all human laws
and extends to all our earthly creation care
even when rationalizations offer pitiful excuses
For all the world’s wealth as amassed in gold
will never match the peace and abiding virtues
unearthed in one big thing—The Golden Rule

This gilded joy leads me onto paths of redemption
As gentle waves wash my lost steps into oblivion
love embraces my hopeful horizons—whispering
Everyone is a child of God—now act like it!

(Matthew 7:12)
